It's a rainy Saturday afternoon as I prepare myself for the rather long journey down to Niort to checkout Deniz Tek & Scott Morgan.
Niort is not a large town but is known for its friendly atmosphere. Arriving around 7.30pm I found the hall quite easily. The place where the concert was held was only built two years ago so everything is practically brand new.I must admit the hall was well equipped with all the latest in sound and lighting.
A quick chat to the sound engineer made me laugh as the band were having trouble with the sound check. With three guitarists all playing through Marshall stacks it's no wonder the sound guy was finding the task of keeping things to a reasonable level difficult. The check was finished so I headed to a local place to eat and have a few beers.
With no opening band I had plenty of time to get into the right frame of mind for the concert.
A promise of a 10pm start was true and the band came out on stage with the bass player ringing out the lines of MC5's "Future/Now". AWAY THEY WENT!!!
No really a large crowd but all the people were really enthusiastic about the music that was playing.
Scott Morgan is just a brilliant singer and they rolled on with Sonics Rendezvous Band's "Dangerous" followed by "Asteroid B612".
Deniz then took over for "Blood From A Stone" and a song I have never heard live called "Give It Up" from the "Outside" album.
What else can I say when Deniz open up the chords to Birdman's "Hangin' On", I thought I was in heaven.
The Iceman had the Epiphone in fine form while Scott with his Telecaster blasted away with the other guitarist who was using a Les Paul.
More SRB numbers and Tek originals kept the evening rolling on.
The night came to an end with "City Slang" and Scott set the end of his guitar on fire with Mr Tek putting it out with a schooner of beer.
A scream for an encore went up and the guys came back out. Mr Tek asked for a certain "Birdman Bowen" to come up on stage and sing "New Race" with the band. As you can now imagine I was in total heaven and ripped through the song. It was quite a good response as I came of the stage and I was happy to hear that Deniz had started the opening chords to "TV Eye"!!!
What else can I ask for???
The band headed off stage and the lights dimmed. Was this to be the end?? NO!!!!
Back they came this time to the Stooges I Got A Right and the crowd was going beserk!!! The end was in sight and the band headed off stage to the dressing room. WHAT A NIGHT!!
After the gig I sat back with Scott & Deniz and listened to the mini disc of the whole gig. Let me just say it's great.Lets hope someone will do something with it instead of leaving it to collect dust. All I can say is that those guys have lost nothing over the years and they do deliver!!
Greg "Birdman" Bowen's report is brought to us by Crown Lager. He flies any airline that will have him and is dressed by Funhouse Fashions. Greg's Radio Birdman web site can be found here.
