BIRDMAN
RESCUE ROOMS, NOTTINGHAM, U.K.
AUGUST 31, 2003
It was billed as Birdman's first UK gig in 25 years. In fact, the poster for
the gig had as its quote the amusing "They were 25 years ahead of their time".
It was worth the wait.
The Rescue Room is a great little, sinful venue with a great band room, high stage and upstairs balcony. It was thick with smoke. The narrow stage however cramped the band but focused the crowd.
On the matters crowd a healthy, but not full, house welcomed the band to the stage who gave the appearance of not knowing the set list. A wag in the crowd yelled "Play a fuckin song" to which Bobby Younger replied: "We'll play when we're good and fuckin ready".
"Burn My Eye" started the festivities. All the favourites were trotted out. The six pints I had had leading into the gig means I don't remember the sequence of the songs. You know the score though. "Non Stop Girls", "Do the Pop", "Murder City Nights", "Aloha Steve and Danno", "Man with Golden Helmet", "Descent into the Maelstrom" were all there.
The band lost it in one of the songs. This might have been put down tot he fact that they had finished up at the serie z festival in Spain at 3am. But they are allowed to make mistakes 'cos they are Birdman. Let's get things straight here they played with the word that the English Cricket team could use: P A S S I O N. The cover songs were scorching versions of "Waitin' for the Man" and "Route 66". They also did "Transmaniacon" (my least favourite BOC number). Great night all ends up. One minor complaint they didn't play "You're Gonna Miss Me" or "Hand of Law".
Birdman playing loud remains the greatest rock n roll experience you can have. Now it's off to Perugia
