MARTIN DOY

Share Due to footy commitments (my team was on the TV) I arrived too late to see and hear Horse Bolted, but they seem to be the go-to band in Newcastle as far as support slots are concerned. I'd seen them before and will no doubt catch them again somewhere.

Surprise, surprise greets my eyes as I enter this traditional Australian corner pub - it's a near full venue and the one-and-only Pip Hoyle is doing final adjustments to his keyboards. Tek and Hoyle performing together, here, for free. Expectations rose.

Those expecting the blitzkrieg of Birdman didn't show their disappointment as rumps got to shaking and hands found the air in glorious salute to a set that was a mixture of rock, blues, and even a tinge of country, if you could call the distorted guitar sound a "twang".

Songwriting credits were shared through the set with a cover of a Vibrators song, "Whips and Furs", the Stooges' "Dirt", and "Let's Go" an Exploding Fuyck Dolls song written by the two American twins in the band, Art and Steve Godoy.

Beer got spilt as the dancing intensified the longer the set went on with its climax in the Birdman cover "Hand Of The Law".

The PA in this venue is not the greatest and so some vocals got a bit lost in the off-stage volume, but those of the assembled singing along didn't seem to mind one bit.

What more could you want on a Friday night when your footy team loses than to be cheered up with some good honest, and free, rock'n'roll? Nothing!
