SPLITSVILLE VOL. 1 - Supersuckers & Electric Frankenstein (The Music Cartel)

I'll admit to not being a great fan of either of these bands. The Supersuckers are living proof that if the Seattle scene ain't dead, it sure smells funny. Call me old-fashioned, but generic guitar-driven punk rock'n'roll with lyrics about smack and Satan just doesn't do it for me.

Likewise, New Jerseyites Electric Frankenstein might indeed have 60 albums, splits, singles, and compilation tracks to their credit, but quantity doesn't necessarily equal quality. What distinguishes them from the legions of other bands that sound Like This is their occasionally audible Black Sabbath influence, and rhythm guitarist Sal Canzonieri's apparent obsession with something called "the Anti-Rock Conspiracy."

Best things here are the opening lines to each band's lead-off toon. Supersuckers: "Yeah, I still smoke/I drink too much/Yeah I'm still broke, baby let's go Dutch." EF: "Sing me a love song, and I'll show you to the fuckin' door." Proof positive (as if any were needed) that it takes more than Attitood to make worthwhile rock'n'roll. - Ken Shimamoto
